Swim Meet 101
Start Time: 6pm. Swimmers arrive by 5:15.
5 Quick Tips for Meets
1. Carpool or walk, if possible!
For Home Meets parking is tight and we need to save space for visitors. Be mindful of members and guests.
For Away Meets, parking is also a challenge and frequently involves utilizing neighborhood streets for parking. Leave early so you have ample time to arrive and get settled before the meet begins.
2. Show your support of BWE. Wear your BWE gear or our team color, blue. The Team sits together. Please join in!
At Home Meets we sit on the right side of the pool as you enter (diving board side).
For Away Meets, look for the sea of coaches in blue BWE shirts and claim your spot.
3. Take Advantage of On-Site Dining Options (bring cash). Most clubs take alternate forms of payment, but it's best to be prepared. More information on snack and meal options below.
4. Identify your swimmer's events using the Heat Sheet and record that information on your swimmer. More information below and on the Heat Sheet webpage.
5. Volunteers need to check-in upon arrival. Check in at the volunteer desk for a name tag and instructions. The volunteer desk at home meets is located on the right as you enter the pool deck.
The sections below contain information on the following (in order):

Heat Sheets
Heat sheets are provided the day of the meet in two ways:
1.Schedule 2. Afffixed to clubhouse wall facing the pool deck.
The Heat Sheet Webpage provides helpful hints on how to locate your swimmers events within the program.
FAQ: Should I print a Heat Sheet? It is extremely helpful to print one, not required. Having a heat sheet on hand helps with the following:
- Reference to know which events/heats/lanes your swimmer is in.
- Figure out which kids are where during what race. They all start to look alike when they're wearing the same caps and goggles!
Meet Scratches
If your swimmer is no longer able to swim after entry period has closed, please communicate this to the team ASAP via email [email protected]. This is extremely important to make sure relay teams are able to participate and to make the meet run smoothly and efficiently. This simple curtesy will help meet efficiency tremendously!
Event Flow
Meets are organized by event and swum by gender and, in ascending order by age group. For example, the 7-8 year old girls will swim their backstroke first, followed by the 7-8 year old boys, followed by the 9-10 year old girls...up through the 15-18 year old boys.
* Shrimper Group Exception: The 6 & under group swims at the very beginning of each meet and they only swim freestyle with girls first, then boys.
Event Order:
Freestyle – 6 & Under (Shrimpers)
Freestyle Relay – all age groups starting with 7-8’s
Freestyle – remaining age groups starting with 7-8’s
Backstroke – all age groups starting with 7-8’s
Individual Medley – only for age groups 9 & up
Breaststroke – all age groups starting with 7-8’s
Butterfly – all age groups starting with 7-8’s
Medley Relay – all age groups starting 7-8’s
*If your swimmer is named as an alternate in the free relay, do not leave early! Alternates are needed more frequently than you may think.
Scoring
Team points are awarded for the top four finishers in each individual event (not each heat) for each age group. Points can be scored from any heat, as the fastest four times count, no matter the heat. No points are awarded for Shrimp events (6 & under). The points awarded during a dual meet are:
Individual
- 1st Place / 5 points
- 2nd Place / 3 points
- 3rd Place / 2 points
- 4th Place / 1 point
Relay
- 1st Place / 10 points
- 2nd Place / 6 points
Only “A” relay teams may score points in relay events. If an “A” relay team is DQ’d, the swim team receives no points for that relay (i.e., no points are ever awarded to “B” or “C” teams, even if they beat an “A” team).
In the event of a tie, the points for the applicable place, plus the immediately following place, are added together and split equally. For example, if there is a tie for 1st Place in any individual event, each swimmer gets 4 points (5 points, plus 3 points, divided by 2 = 4 points), and the next fastest swimmer is awarded 2 points for 3rd Place.
Ribbons
Ribbons are awarded at Dual Meets for individual events, 1st through 6th place, and for relays, 1st and 2nd place.
- Participant Ribbons for ALL 6 & under swimmers (Shrimpers)
- Heat Winner ribbons for ALL 10 & under individual events
- NOTE – No ribbons are awarded for 15 & up events
All Star Meet
The All-Star Meet for the SouthPark Swim League is usually held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center (MCAC) in uptown.
Mecklenburg Aquatic Center (MCAC): 800 E M.L.K. Jr Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28202
Event Date: Thursday, June 25th
BWE All-Star Team Selection: The Team* is chosen by the coaches and based on times from the season. There are no Shrimp events at the All-Star Meet; however, a shrimp may age up to swim in an 8 & Under event if qualified.
*Alternates are selected for each event. Not all swimmers who make the team will swim during the meet. Alternate presence is important and necessary!
Swimmer Eligibility: A swimmer must compete in a minimum of two (2) meets to be eligible for the All-Star Team.
